ready in time for thecity’sstint asEuropean
Capital ofCulturenext year. Anundulating
railwaystationdesignedbySantiagoCalatrava
will be flankedbyacurvedandangular
conferencecentrebyDaniel Libeskindwhich
will comprise threeauditoriums, offices,
a restaurant, parkingspaceandagreen roof.

ThenewSchool ofArchitecture inStrasbourg
is located in the inner cityand isall about
merging the insideand theoutsideand
connecting thebuilding’suserswith residents
of theEuropeanmetropolis. Accordingly, the
see-throughground floor hasanexhibition
spacedesigned tobringstudentsandcity
locals together, and the rest of thebuilding is
composedof two-storeyblocksstackedon
topof oneanother at specificangles to frame
thebest viewsout of thecity through large
windows. Byday its ribbedaluminiumskinand
glazedexterior reflects themovementsof the
sun; bynight it createsashimmeringpattern
of lines, revealing thebuilding’sbeautifully
rawandexposedsteel structure.

todecay for decades.Now it is finallybeing
restoredand turned intoamixed-usecomplex
aspart of a£750m (€935m) transformation.
Thestation’s twostriking turbinehallswill
house retail units, and theboiler rooman
auditorium. Above themwill besix floorsof
officespace, andon the top floors254 flats.
Oneof the four famouschimneyswill contain
theproject’smost show-stopping feature:
