time. Shaw joined theNewOrleansSaints
in1994andthen jumpedtothePatriotsasa
strength-and-conditioning coach, earning
threeSuperBowlringsalongtheway.
Shaw’struegreatnessasatrainermaylie
inhis ability to spot the faults that others
havemissedwhen it comes to speed. For
many, it’sa lackofstride length,whichhe’ll
studyand tweakuntil it’sfixed. Forothers,
it’s a concentrationon explosiveness that
targets focusedweightlifting.
Itwasathisfirst trainingcamp, in 1994
inNewOrleans,whereShawstartedhoning
hisSPARQphilosophy(speed,power,agility,
reaction,quickness)witharegimenofdrills
and exercises. A local kid named Peyton
Manning attended camp at the age of 16,
callingplayswithNFL standoutsandeven
droppingspirals intothehandsoftwo-time
ProBowlerClarenceVerdin. Aboyamong
men—butnot inShaw’seyes. “Peytonhad
something special beyond arm strength,”
Shaw says. “You could tell hewas going to
beagreatproevenwithoutthephysicalgifts.
Hewasa leaderandhewasn’tafraid.”Man-
ningwouldeventuallybedraftedNo. 1out
of theUniversity of Tennessee by the In-
dianapolisColtsandgoon towin fourNFL
MVPsandaSuperBowl.
Then therewas this quarterbackat the
UniversityofMichiganwhowasalways los-
ing his starting job. Shaw likedhim espe-
cially. “TomBradyhadaworkethic like few
you’ll eversee,”Shawrecalls. “Peopledon’t
always realize his arm strength. I’ve had
DonovanMcNabb,JayCutler,Peyton—and
thisguycouldhurtyourhandsmorefrom40
yardsaway.…Everybody learned fromhim,
andhemakeseveryonewanttoworkharder.”
