When I’m in L.A., I often stay
near the airport, and I love to
stareoutmyhotelwindowat the
747s. In fact, I frequently take a
run along SepulvedaBoulevard,
where, like thatnight Iwasdriv-
ing, planes come in right over
my head. It stops me in my
tracksevery time.Theonly thing
that tops that, in fact, is the stop
I make at In-N-Out Burger on
mywayback to thehotel.
What is my (and many peo-
ple’s) fascinationwithairplanes?
I wonder. Because some of us
(andmost of you on this plane)
travel somuch, we seem to take
for granted the ability to get
fromoneplace toanotherquick-
ly and almost effortlessly. In-
steadofmarvelingat this feat of
engineering,we complainabout
weather delays, how loud our
neighbor is, and the overall
tiredness that comes frombeing
in three time zones inoneday.
Does it sound like I’m de-
scribing you? If so, then you’re
probably a bona fide road war-
rior.Andwe’regoing togive you

zoomed right overmy car. It seemed as though itweremere
feet away. I looked at it through the sunroof in awe. Luckily
thereweren’t a lot of cars on the road, because Imight have
run intooneof them inmybriefmoment(s) of distraction.
