The detergent is essential. While you may think the cleaning compound was meant for the metal parts of the tumble media, it is actually necessary for its use. The cleaning compound helps keep pores open in the tumbling medium by providing lubricity. If the pores of the tumbling medium become glazed, cutting will cease to work. The metal parts will become black. The soap was not used to make the parts black.

Reduce the mess. Regularly clean the sludge. Here's a tip: Place horse bedding in the tank to absorb any remaining water. This makes it easier to use a shovel to remove the remaining sludge.
