DODO MARMAROSA
DODO'S DANCEAT LAST! Dodo gets his due. With this amazing, low-priced, 28-track disc from Proper Records, Dodo willl not be denied. Named by Artie Shaw "the best white modern jazz pianist of his time," this Pittsburgh native was a classically trained pianist who happened to hear Erroll Garner play while both were still in high school and so discovered the jazz that lay dormant in his soul. Straight out of high school, Dodo played with, in quick succession, Gene Krupa, Buddy DeFranco, Charlie Barnet, Tommy Dorsey and Artie Shaw.
The recordings on Dodo's Dance start off after this apprenticeship had run its course and features some of his most adventurous work, all recorded in the late 1940s, a period during which he worked with such Jazz luminaries as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Slim Gaillard, among others.
Many jazz fans will consider this a great opportunity to familiarize themselves with Dodo's work, but every jazz fan from Pittsburgh should consider this a must.
Here's his informative Obituary from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
