JOSEPH, Mo. - The 4th ranked Missouri Western football team fell 31-30 in a heartbreaker against the Missouri Southern Lions on Homecoming. The Griffons turned the ball over on its final two possessions which ultimately gave them their first loss of the season. Missouri Western falls to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in MIAA play. Missouri Western finished with 493 yards of offense with 260 coming on the ground. This marked the first game in two years that the Griffons have lost when rushing for over 200 yards. Travis Partridge had 67 yards while Michael Hill finished with 53 yards on 14 carries. Kyle Knox caught five passes for 103 yards while Partridge connected on 20-of-27 passes for 233 yards.The Lions had 374 yards with 237 on the ground. Venson had 91 yards on five carries while Threatt had 37 yards on seven carries. Juergens finished with 11 tackles while David Bass and Ray Cottman chipped in seven apiece. Aaron Hall led the Lions with eight tackles with six being solo. Demond Horsely had seven tackles, all of which were solo. No. 16 Missouri Western used 56 unanswered points to defeat No. 7 Pittsburg State 63-14. Michael Hill ran for 116 yards and Travis Partridge countered with 213 yards through the air. Hill had three scores on the ground and Partridge had four touchdowns. The Griffons defense then stopped the Gorillas for the majority of the game after the 7-7 tie. David Bass recorded three sacks, and also scored a touchdown on a tipped pass that ended up in the defensive end’s hands. He took it 55 yards for the score to put the Griffons ahead 21-7. Pittsburg couldn’t do much offensively, and the Griffons continued to score points to take a 42-7 halftime lead. Missouri Western eventually stretched its lead to 56-7, marking eight unanswered scores before Pittsburg put another touchdown in to make it 56-16. Raphael Spencer scored on a 12-yard run to end the game with Missouri Western on top 63-14. Brandon Wright and Derek Libby both score on long receptions, as the Griffons found their downfield game Saturday. The Gorillas ended with game with five turnovers, including three on downs. John Brown finished with a game-high 13 grabs and 153 yards with the one score. It was the worst home loss for Pittsburg since a 63-0 loss to Tulsa on Oct. 31, 1914. The Griffons won the last three games that have been played in Pittsburg, Kan. Since 2006, the Griffons are 4-2 against the Gorillas, winning twice in Pittsburg (2007, 2009) and twice in St. Joseph (2006, 2010).
