Wes Bell enters his seventh season with the Griffons as the Defensive Line Coach/Strength and Conditioning Coach. Last season the Griffon Defensive Line anchored the defense. The Griffons were led by now Oakland Raider, David Bass (7th RD, 233 pick) who was named to numerous All-America teams and was a First Team All-MIAA performer. Bass finished his career as the Griffons all-time sack leader with 40.5 and all-time leader in tackles for a loss with 56. Bell also coached First Team All-MIAA selection Ben Pister. Pister broke Bass’s record for most tackles for a loss in a season with 22.5 and had eight sacks. Pister was also named to numerous All-Region and All-America teams. The Griffon defensive line accumulated for 28 of the Griffons’ 31 sacks and 59 of the 89 tackles for a loss. They also had two interceptions (both by Bass) and 21 pass break ups. In 2011, Bell’s defensive line recorded 59 tackles for a loss and 33 sacks. David Bass had 20 tackles for a loss and was one-half sack away from tying the single season record for sacks (14.5). Bass earned All-MIAA Frst Team honors as well as AP Little All-American Second Team, BSN First Team All-American, Daktronics All-American, D2Football.com First Team All-American and was named two-time MIAA Player of the Week. Other defensive line members Ben Pister and Austin Baska earned Second Team and Honorable Mention All-MIAA honors respectively. Pister earned Honorable Mention All-America honors from Don Hansen as well as All-Region. Baska earned All-Region from Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. In 2010 he coached All-MIAA Second Team selection David Bass. Bass led the team with 10.5 tackles for a loss and eight sacks. He also had two interceptions and four pass break-ups to go along with six passes defended. As a defense, the Griffons and 21 sacks had 64 tackles for a loss. In 2009 Brad Davidson was named to the All-MIAA Honorable Mention squad while redshirt freshman David Bass was the Defensive MVP of the 44th Mineral Water Bowl. He collected seven tackles with 2.5 being for a loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one interception and 1.5 sacks. In the 2008, season, Bell coached Soane Etu, who was an All-MIAA first team selection at defensive end. He recorded 12 tackles for a loss to go along with eight sacks. Bell’s two defensive ends recorded a combined 16.5 sacks. In 2007, Bell coached a second team All-MIAA performer, Soane Etu, who helped the Griffons defense record 28 sacks. Bell came to Western from Minnesota State University-Moorhead where he had coached for two years. In his first year-and-a-half at Moorhead, Bell was the Defensive Line Coach, Special Teams Coordinator and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator. In the spring of 2007, Bell moved to defensive coordinator and coached the inside linebackers. At MSU-Moorhead, Bell coached two defensive linemen that received All-Conference accolades in 2005 and three defensive lineman that received All-Conference honors in 2006. Prior to MSU-Moorhead, Bell coached at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan., where he was the co-Defensive Coordinator and the Defensive Line Coach. He also coached at Emporia High School during the 2003-04 season. Bell attended Independence Community College for two years. He then transferred to Emporia State University, where he played on the defensive line. Bell was a team captain and received All-MIAA honors while playing at Emporia. Bell holds a bachelor’s degree in social science from Emporia State University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from MSU-Moorhead. He prepped at Marais des Cygnes Valley High School in Melvern, Kan., where he was an All-State football and basketball player.
