Owens scored from seven yards out, before Chase Varnadore hit a 37-yard field goal as the half expired to give the Rattlers a 23-10 lead at the break. Hampton wasted no time striking in the second half, taking the first possession 78 yards in four plays before Travis Champion connected with Andre Griffin from 33 yards out to cut FAMU’s lead to 23-17. Owens had the Rattlers’ answer, though, scampering 56 yards for the touchdown on the next possession to once again make it a two-score game. Durham hit his second field goal of the night, a 25-yarder, with 3:33 left in the third to cut FAMU’s lead to 30-20. But the Rattlers scored twice more, thanks to a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter from Damien Fleming. Champion led the Pirates offensively with a career-high 347 passing yards, going 28-for-53. Jeremiah Schwartz gave the Pirates their first 100- yard rusher of the season, carrying the ball 16 times for 101 yards. He averaged 6.3 yards per carry. Twarn Mixson was Hampton’s top receiver Saturday night, catching five balls for 100 yards. Griffin had 85 yards on four catches. Lyndell Gibson led the Pirates defense with nine tackles.   Score by Quarters Hampton 7 3 10 0 - 20 Record: (0-3,0-1) Florida A&M 13 10 7 14 - 44 Record: (1-2,1-0) Scoring Sumary 1st Quarter 11:38 FAMU - HARVEY,Travis 18 yd pass from FLEMING,Damien (VARNADORE,Chase kick blockd), 7-70 3:22, HAM 0 - FAMU 6 08:27 HAM - McCLOUDE,Antoni 8 yd pass from CHAMPION,Travis (DURHAM,Taurean kick), 9-74 3:02, HAM 7 - FAMU 6 02:10 FAMU - OWENS,James 2 yd run (VARNADORE,Chase kick), 4-86 2:16, HAM 7 - FAMU 13 2nd Quarter 11:19 HAM - DURHAM,Taurean 24 yd field goal, 7-27 2:44, HAM 10 - FAMU 13 07:38 FAMU - OWENS,James 7 yd run (VARNADORE,Chase kick), 7-57 3:31, HAM 10 - FAMU 20 00:00 FAMU - VARNADORE,Chase 37 yd field goal, 8-27 3:24, HAM 10 - FAMU 23 3rd Quarter 13:49 HAM - GRIFFIN,Andre 33 yd pass from CHAMPION,Travis (DURHAM,Taurean kick), 4-78 1:05, HAM 17 - FAMU 23 08:18 FAMU - OWENS,James 56 yd run (VARNADORE,Chase kick), 4-70 1:49, HAM 17 - FAMU 30 03:33 HAM - DURHAM,Taurean 25 yd field goal, 12-60 4:37, HAM 20 - FAMU 30 4th Quarter 11:47 FAMU - LENNON,Lenworth 4 yd pass from FLEMING,Damien (VARNADORE,Chase kick), 13-60 6:34, HAM 20 - FAMU 37 04:32 FAMU - ETHERIDGE,Micha 19 yd pass from FLEMING,Damien (VARNADORE,Chase kick), 1-19 0:06, HAM 20 - FAMU 44 Team Stats HAM FAMU FIRST DOWNS 22 23 RUSHES-YARDS (NET) 23-127 34-253 PASSING YDS (NET) 347 236 Passes Att-Comp-Int. 53-28-1 29-22-1 TOTAL OFFENSE PLAYS-YARDS 76-474 63-489 Fumble Returns-Yards 0-0 0-0 Punt Returns-Yards 2-9 1-0 Kickoff Returns-Yards 7-148 4-117 Interception Returns-Yards 1-0 1--1 Punts (Number-Avg) 3-40.7 3-42.3 Fumbles-Lost 2-1 1-1 Penalties-Yards 12-116 9-63 Possession Time 27:54 32:06 Third-Down Conversions 4 of 15 7 of 11 September 29, 2012 – Hampton, Va. Armstrong Stadium (1,200) HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University football team made a late comeback attempt on Saturday at Armstrong Stadium, but came up short and couldn’t overcome several turnovers in falling 38-26 to Bethune-Cookman. The Pirates (0-4, 0-2 MEAC) turned the ball over seven times, throwing four interceptions and losing three fumbles. The Wildcats struck first, going up 7-0 with 10:46 left in the first quarter after Quentin Williams capped a 10-play, 67- yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run. The Pirates scored on the ensuing drive, as Taurean Durham nailed a 30-yard field goal with 8:12 left in the quarter to cut Bethune-Cookman’s lead to 7-3. Bethune-Cookman (3-2, 2-0 MEAC) ended the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by Rodney Scott to cap off another 10-play drive to put the Wildcats up 14-3. The Pirates responded in the second quarter by marching 73 yards on seven plays, before Travis Champion connected with Andre Griffin from 11 yards out with 12:38 left in the half to cut the Wildcats’ lead to 14-10. The Wildcats answered with a 42-yard field goal with 4:36 left in the half to go up 17-10. Hampton opened the second half by driving down the field, taking eight plays to enter the redzone. But in Hampton’s first redzone play, Nick Addison picked off Champion’s pass at the 10-yard line before returning the ball 90 yards for the score to put the Wildcats up 24-10 with 11:40 left in the third quarter. The Wildcats then forced at Hampton three-and-out, before taking advantage of a short punt to drive 39 yards in six plays. Bethune-Cookman ended that drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Isidore Jackson with 7:22 left in the third quarter to take a 31-10 lead. Hampton appeared to answer on the next drive, taking 4:32 off the clock and going 74 yards in 11 plays, but the Pirates couldn’t convert a 4th down opportunity in the redzone. On the Wildcats’ next possession, Bethune-Cookman appeared on its way to another score, driving into the redzone. But the Pirates defense held firm, forcing a 32-yard field goal attempt with 13:52 left in the fourth quarter – but Marhall Lee-Mundin blocked the kick and recovered the ball. The Pirates wouldn’t back down, though, as Jaylian Williamson found hamptonpirates.com 2013 Hampton Football 109
