POSTSEASON RECORDS REVIEW OPPONENTS MEAC PIRATES COACHES PREVIEW HAMPTON 2012 Pirate game recaps Game #2 Old Dominion 45, Hampton 7 3rd Quarter 12:06 ODU - Nick Mayers 15 yd pass from Taylor Heinicke (Jarod Brown kick), 9-60 2:48, ODU 35 - HAM 7 September 8, 2012 – Hampton, Va. Armstrong Stadium (5,500) HAMPTON, Va.– The third meeting between the Pirates of Hampton University and the No. 7 Monarchs of Old Dominion was called due to inclement weather with 9:43 left to play in the fourth quarter. Turnovers had taken their toll on the Pirates by that point, as they dropped their home opener 45-7 on Saturday. The Pirates (0-2), who are now 3-1 in home openers under head coach Donovan Rose, saw what many thought would be a close affair go wrong behind four uncommon turnovers. The Pirates got the ball to start the game but went a quick three-and-out, while ODU went 71 yards in 14 plays for the first score of the game when Tyree Lee ran in from two yards out. The Pirates seemed more poised on their second drive of the game, as they went 41 yards to the Monarchs’ 32-yard line before a bad snap on 4thand 2 forced a fumble by quarterback Travis Champion. The fumble forced a turnover on downs and ODU drove 68 yards in 14 plays, going up 14-0 thanks to a four-yard touchdown run by Blair Roberts. The ensuing drive was another great drive for the Pirates, when they went 92 yards in 11 plays that ended in a touchdown run by Jeremiah Schwartz. Hampton’s defense would then go to work, forcing ODU to punt, but the Monarchs’ Chris Burnette would get a sack fumble on Champion at the Pirates’ 42-yard line. The Pirates defense once again got the job done and forced ODU to punt the ball back to Hampton. The Pirates were once again victims of the turnover bug when running back Antonio McCloude halted a five-play, 44-yard drive with a fumble at the ODU 44-yard line. The Monarchs then went 56 yards in just three plays for a 40-yard touchdown pass from Taylor Heninicke to Larry Pinkard to make the score 21-7. ODU scored on its opening possession on the third quarter by driving 60 yards down the field for the Monarchs’ fourth touchdown of the game. The Monarchs then kicked a 35-yard field goal and had Colby Goodwyn run in from six yards out following interceptions by ODU’s defense. Hampton finished the game with 245 yards of total offense, with 217 of those yards coming in the air. Champion had the first 200-yard passing game of his career, connecting with wide receiver Jorrian Washington four times for a total of 84 yards. DeVonte’ Hawkins led the defense with 16 total tackles, with one tackle for a loss of two yards. Heninicke was the guy for ODU, finishing the game with 213 yards passing and three touchdown passes. He also had 55 yards rushing for the Monarchs.
