POSTSEASON RECORDS REVIEW OPPONENTS MEAC PIRATES COACHES PREVIEW HAMPTON 2012 Pirate game recaps Javaris Brown from 25 yards out with 8:16 left in the fourth quarter to cap a five-play, 71-yard drive and cut the Wildcats’ lead to 31-17. But the Wildcat answered again, capitalizing on a Hampton fumble when Brodrick Waters hit David Blackwell for an 80-yard touchdown pass with 5:37 to play to take a 38-17 lead. The Pirates defense recorded a late safety to cut the lead to 38-19 with 4:03 left to play. That momentum carried to the offense, as the Pirates embarked on a nine-play, 57-yard drive before Jeremiah Schwartz punched it in from one yard out with 1:09 to play to cut Bethune-Cookman’s lead to 38-26. The Wildcats recovered the ensuing onside kick, however, and ran out the clock. Champion threw for 208 yards for the Pirates, completing 20 of his 33 passes, while Williamson completed five of his nine passes for 71 yards. Each Pirates quarterback had a touchdown pass, though Champion has three interceptions. Schwartz ran for 201 yards on 25 carries, becoming the first Pirate to rush for over 200 yards in a single game since Kevin Beverly rushed for 204 yards against North Carolina A&T in 2006. Schwartz is tied with Beverly for the ninth-highest single-game rushing total in program history. Griffin finished one yard shy of 100 receiving yards on six catches. In all, the Pirates had 536 yards of total offense – 279 through the air and 257 on the ground. Delbert Tyler led Hampton on defense with 10 tackles, while Lyndell Gibson had nine tackles.   Score by Quarters Bethune-Cokman 14 3 14 7 - 38 Record: (3-2,2-0) Hampton 3 7 0 16 - 26 Record: (0-4,0-2) Scoring Sumary 1st Quarter 10:46 BCU - WILLIAMS,Quentin 5 yd run (HURD,Sven kick), 10-67 4:14, BCU 7 - HAM 0  08:12 HAM - DURHAM,Taurean 30 yd field goal, 8-60 2:29, BCU 7 - HAM 3 00:19 BCU - SCOTT,Rodney 1 yd run (HURD,Sven kick), 10-65 3:58, BCU 14 - HAM 3 Gourmet Living….embodies the essence of exceptional dining and culinary hospitality. 2nd Quarter 12:38 HAM - GRIFFIN,Andre 11 yd pass from CHAMPION,Travis Come Join Us From 8am-10pm. Armstrong Stadium (8,500) HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University football team picked up its first win of the 2012 season on Saturday, defeating rival Norfolk State 28-14 at Armstrong Stadium in the annual Battle of the Bay. The Pirates (1-4, 1-2 MEAC) have now won eight straight against the defending MEAC champion Spartans at Armstrong Stadium. Norfolk State (2-5, 0-4 MEAC) has lost five straight games. Hampton wasted no time, taking the game’s opening possession and marching 64 yards in 12 plays before redshirt-senior Jeremiah Schwartz ran 10 yards into the endzone with 11:25 left in the first quarter to put the Pirates up 7-0. After the Spartans lost a fumble with 2:22 left in the opening quarter, the Pirates took immediate advantage. Following a Norfolk State personal foul, sophomore Travis Champion connected with senior Javaris Brown from 20 yards out with 1:58 left in the quarter to take a 14-0 lead. The Spartans struggled to get any momentum on offense, and Norfolk State’s Jake Basmagian threw an interception to junior Delbert Tyler with 5:00 left in the first half, which the linebacker took 10 yards to the endzone to give Hampton a 21-0 lead. Norfolk State turned the ball over three times in 10 first-half possessions. After a scoreless third quarter, the Spartans got on the board with 14:13 left in the fourth quarter after Takeem Hedgeman capped off an eight-play, 21-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to cut Hampton’s lead to 21-7. Another Spartans turnover with 10:19 left in the game set up the Pirates’ final score, as Hampton needed just three plays and 17 yards before Schwartz ran two yards for his second touchdown of the day with 9:09 left to put Hampton up 28-7. Basmagian found Xavier Boyce from 10 yards out with 7:06 to play to cut Hampton’s lead to 28-14, but Hampton held on for the win, as the Spartans turned the ball over on their final possession with 1:41 left to play. In all, Norfolk State committed five turnovers. Basmagian threw four interceptions – including two to senior Lyndell Gibson.
