41 Coaching Staff Tony Ierulli returns for his third season working with Carson-Newman and his second with the Eagles’ defensive ends. Ierulli has more than 30 years of college coaching experience. In January of 2003, he was introduced as the 27th head coach in nearby Maryville College’s 118-year history. A year before that, Ierulli was named the Division II Assistant Coach of the Year while at Shippensburg University. Ierulli ranked third all-time in wins at Maryville with 39, and was the assistant athletic director at his alma mater for nine years. In addition to his coaching duties, Ierulli served on the NCAA Football Rules Committee from 2008-11. Throughout his career, Ierulli and his wife Carol have established a mentoring and tutoring program at local elementary schools. These started while Ierulli was an assistant at Missouri. The Ierullis believe football players should be used as role models for children in the community. The Ierullis have three children, A.J., Katie and Kelli, as well as two granddaughters, Ruby and Adley and two grandsons, Vincent and Anthony. TONY IERULLI D-ENDS 3rd Year Maryville ‘80 Alan Duncan begins his sixth season coaching the kickers and punters at Carson-Newman, one of whom was his son, Curt Duncan. His son finishes his Carson-Newman career as the single season record holder for points by a kicker and field goals made. His progeny is also second in C-N’s record book for the career tallies for the same categories. ALAN DUNCAN KICKERS 6th Year University of Tennessee ‘81 Curt was a two-time All-SAC pick and an academic All-American. Duncan mentored former All-SAC kicker Carlos Lopez in the 2009-2010 seasons and current Dallas Cowboys punter and All-SAC standout Chris Jones from 2009-2010. Duncan had a storied career at the University of Tennessee where he was known as the “Swahili Sidewinder” and still holds the record for field goals in a game (5) and points for a kicker in a game (17). With 180 career points, he is the No. 12 all-time scorer for the Volunteers and the No. 8-ranked kicker. Duncan was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1981 and also spent time with the Broncos in 1982. He kicked for the USFL Memphis Showboats for two seasons. Duncan is the state representative for Tennessee and four other states for the International Mission Board and served for 16 years in South Africa. Duncan and his wife, Andrea, have four children; Curt, Betsy, Beth-Ann and Chrissy. Alex Good is in his second year on the Carson-Newman coaching staff. Good helped transform sophomore De’Andre Thomas into one of the better dual threat QBs in the country during 2013. Thomas set the single game passing efficiency record in his first start with Good’s tutelage and became the first C-N QB since Good to record a 200-yard passing, 150-yard rushing game. ALEX GOOD QUARTERBACKS Year Carson-Newman ‘09 A 2009 finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, which is awarded to Division II’s national Player of the Year. In his senior year, he led the Eagles to an 11-3 mark, which included a perfect 7-0 mark in South Atlantic Conference play. Good sent Carson-Newman to a no. 4 national ranking and an appearance in the DII semifinals against Grand Valley State. Good’s and the Eagles’ veer-option offense led the nation in rushing offense that year at 322 yards per game, including 89.2 per game from Good. The Eagles also averaged 458 yards per game in total offense, which ranked 10th nationally. The Greensboro, N.C. native had the Eagles averaging 43 points per game in SAC play, and rushing for 344.7 yards per game. His team rushed for 500 and 496 yards in back-to-back wins over Brevard and Wingate, respectively. Good is still the last Carson-Newman quarterback to rush for more than 1,000 yards and pass for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. His senior year he tossed for 1,859 and plowed his way for 1,253 on the ground in addition to rushing for 13 touchdowns and passing for another 19. The four-year starter was a three-time All-South Atlantic Conference selection, Good led the Eagles to four-consecutive SAC titles, and back-to-back NCAA playoff appearances.
