124TH AVENUE
EXTENSION
Partnerships bring
10 years of planning to life
After more than 10 years of planning,
design work, public comment and
meetings, FY 2015 – 16 saw the
groundbreaking for the $30 million
SW 124th Avenue Extension and
Tonquin and Grahams Ferry roads
improvement project.
“We started talking about this project in 2004,”
said Russ Knoebel, principal engineer, Engineering
and Construction Services division. “This project took
longer than usual, because it’s rare for us to build
a brand-new road. Most of the work we do involves
widening roads. So to build two brand-new arterials
took us more time.”
It was worth the time, Knoebel said. The SW
124th Avenue Extension will provide another
connection between Sherwood, Tualatin and
Wilsonville, providing access to land designated
for future industrial and employment development
in all three cities, including the Basalt Creek Area.
Tonquin Road (from 124th to Grahams Ferry Road)
and Grahams Ferry Road (from Tonquin to Day Road)
will also be widened to include center turn lanes and
wide shoulders for bicycles.
