COUNTY’S FOOD CART

 ORDINANCE DISHES UP CUISINE

 AND COMMUNITY

Mobile food carts have officially joined Washington County’s menu
 of approved food-service providers.

A-Engrossed Ordinance No. 831 was adopted by the Board of Com-
missioners in July 2018 (FY 2018–19). LUT staff worked throughout
FY 2017–18 on recommended changes to the Community Develop-
ment Code (CDC) to allow mobile food carts in commercial, insti-
tutional and some transit-oriented land use districts in unincorpo-
 rated Washington County.

“Until now, it was challenging for food carts operating in Washing-
ton County to get land use permits,” said Suzanne Savin, Senior
Planner, Community Planning. “We wanted make it simpler and
 less costly.”

Until Ordinance No. 831 went into effect on Aug. 16, 2018, the CDC
required food carts to go through the same land use application
process as brick-and-mortar restaurants. This could require every-
thing from road improvements to storm water facilities.
