That said, the promo itself left me a little cold. There was nothing wrong with it per se, but CM Punk is experiencing the same growing pains that most WWE wrestlers seem to go through after turning from heel to face. A huge part of what made Punk's character so compelling and relatable was the fact that he was, frankly, kind of a dick. We liked him, sure, but he wasn't afraid of baring his teeth and saying some really heelish stuff, especially since when we were all cheering him loudest last summer, he was still more-or-less a villain, albeit an extremely relatable one. He was like Doctor Doom or Magneto.
But every time the King of Latveria or the Master of Magnetism join the good guys in the comics they instantly become less interesting as conflicts are resolved and they become less threatening. Punk has lost the sense of menace that allowed people to get behind him so aggressively last year and he sounds more and more like just another standard WWE face. Also, he sits in the ring to give promos, which while definitely a quirk that he owns, still comes across as weak and forceless to me.
