Harkness Almighty, Captain Jack has finally come to America (sort of) as Torchwood: Miracle Day finally debuted on Starz last week with the premiere episode "The New World."
A bold new day dawns for planet Earth as the population realizes that its citizens are no longer dying despite grave injury and sickness, and only the mysterious Torchwood team can answer the threat when the CIA finds itself powerless to answer the question of where death has gone.
So what will happen on tonight's second episode "Rendition," when Rex Matheson drags the reluctant team all the way to America? Here's our bit-by-bit recap of season premiere "The New World" to get you up to speed!
- Convicted pedophile and murderer Oswald Dane (Bill Pullman) undergoes his execution, only to survive the deadly injection, signaling to the world something is amiss! Of course in the aftermath, Oswald convinces the Governor to grant him his freedom, as he'd carried out his sentence and could flood the state with lawsuits for violating the constitution. Crafty, that Oswald. Crafty, and creepy.
- Meanwhile, the CIA recieves a mysterious e-mail that overrides systems to display only the word TORCHWOOD, arousing the curiosity of young agent Esther Drummond (Alexa Havins). Relaying the information to Agent Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer) she inadvertantly causes Rex to get in a car accident impaling himself on some rebar...but he doesn't die, of course!
- Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and Rhys (Kai Owens) live in seclusion away from the events of Torchwood, with their young daughter, cautiously eyeing every couple that comes to the door, or helicopter that flies overhead.
- Esther pursues the matter all the way to the CIA Archives, when an assasination attempt is thwarted by none other than Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) himself! Not wanting her to remember of course, he drugs her with a memory erase. Jack further investigates the medical cases with Dr. Vera Juarez (Arlene Tur), discovering that no matter how badly a body is destroyed, consciousness will never fall into death.
- Just when you try to get out, they pul you back in! Old friend Andy Davidson calls Gwen to visit her father in the hospital, having suffered two heart attacks without dying. And while Gwen and Rhys agree not to investigate the matter further, ol' Rex Matheson drags his impaled self out of the hospital and downs painkillers all the way to England, having linked the worldwide phenomenon to the Torchwood team.
- Rex confronts Gwen and Rhys, ending up tied to a radiator until a motherloving HELICOPTER arrives to bust up the party! But there's Captain Jack, returned to saved the day as a helicopter/jeep chase ensues along the beach, the gang ultimately felling the flying menace.
- The team regroups at the site of the original Torchwood institute, where Jack reveals that a cut he sustained earlier isn't healing. So while the rest of the world seems immortal, dear Captain Jack has become humanly mortal again! Cue the flashing sirens, and Rex Matheson announces that everywhere around the world, we're coming to America!
Tune in to Starz tonight at 10pm for second episode "Rendition," as the Torchwood team heads to America, and the mystery of why people aren't dying deepens even more! And don't forget to keep up with UGO's Live San Diego Comic-Con 2011 coverage, including Torchwood: Miracle Day!
