There's no turning back now! With the second episode, "Rendition," of Starz's American port of Torchwood: Miracle Day, agent Rex Matheson has the team bound for the States to answer this life-prolonging conundrum that is an end to death as we know it.
A bold new day dawns for planet Earth as the population realizes that its citizens are no longer dying despite grave injury and sickness, and only the mysterious Torchwood team can answer the threat when the CIA finds itself powerless to answer the question of where death has gone.
So what will happen on tonight's third episode "Dead of Night," for which San Diego Comic-Con attendees have already caught a sneak preview of? Here's our bit-by-bit recap of episode two "Rendition" to get you up to speed!
- With Rex Matheson having taken Torchwood into custody, he strips jack of his Vortex manipulator (without knowing what it is), and after quarreling over jurisdiction with sexy CIA agent Lyn Peterfield (Dollhouse’s Dichen Lachman), loads Jack and Gwen on to the plane, leaving Rhys and their daughter behind.
- Meanwhile, Oswald Danes continues his PR tour of making amends for his crimes, breaking down and apologizing during a televised interview. It appears to be working, as even some of Esther’s colleagues at the CIA find sympathy for the man. The devious Jilly Kitzinger (Lauren Ambrose) attempts to recruit him under her PR wing, though Danes initially rejects her.
- Playing with Jack’s Vortex Manipulator, Rex learns from Jack that he has low sodium levels, which a call to Dr. Juarez confirms. Juarez meanwhile heads to Washington D.C. for a conference studying the Miracle Day phenomenon. The debate reveals that people still age, but won’t die, and supplies will dwindle exponentially over a short time.
- Esther discovers the CIA’s betrayal of her when her computer account turns up invalid, and a large bribe in her account! And all of this because she noticed some folk going through Rex’s office. Darn that rascally Wayne Knight! Or should I say...Newman...
- On the plane, Agent Lyn attempts to poison the now mortal Jack, but once the team discovers her action, Rex handcuffs himself to her and the group works desperately to counteract the poison, calling Dr. Juarez to use SCIENCE! Common materials found by stripping apart the plane make a suitable antidote for the arsenic. Lyn tries to run interference, but God bless the wonderful Gwen Cooper for decking the icy agent. And Captain Jack? He’ll be fine.
- Upon the plane’s touchdown, Esther informs Rex of the CIA’s betrayal, and he discovers an even larger brie in his account. Switching sides, Rex turns on the guards present, and twists Lyn’s neck around! The Torchwood team and their newest ex-CIA member flee the airport, including an undead, if backward-headed Lyn! She’s gonna be sore in the morning!
