Greetings, Torchwood fans!  With the third episode, "Rendition," of Starz's American port of Torchwood: Miracle Day (which San Diego Comic-Con attendees caught a sneak preview of), the team follows every lead available to unravel the mystery of death, and just what pharmaceutical corporation Phicorp or the newly released and unsettlingly creepy Oswald Danes have to do with it!

A bold new day dawns for planet earth as the population realizes that its citizens are no longer dying despite grave injury and sickness; only the mysterious Torchwood team can answer the threat when the CIA finds itself powerless to answer the question of where death has gone.

So what will happen on tonight's fourth episode "Escape to L.A.?" Here's our bit-by-bit recap of episode three "Dead of Night" to get you up to speed!

  • Newman, er...CIA Director Brian Friedkin (Wayne Knight) walks downstairs in his home, only to discover Rex Matheson waiting for him!  Friedkin assures him that he'll never find those in charge of the Miracle Day conspiracy, but Rex takes his contact phone for good measure.
  • The group is holed up in a dingy apartment, now all fugitives from the government. Tensions mount, but intuition prevails as Jack observes that the Miracle Day phenomenon could have a connection to "morphic fields,"  and that people are being forced to live rather than simply life indefinitely.
  • Following up on leads from their search, the group arrive at a Phicorp warehouse, only to discover a gigantic indoor store of pain killers, which begs the conclusion that the pharmaceutical company had prior knowledge of Miracle Day.
  • Our favorite fiery redhead Jilly Kitzinger (Lauren Ambrose) attempts to recruit Dr. Juarez for a meeting with the ever-mysterious Phicorp, but to no avail.
  • The Torchwood team tries and fails to utilize one of Rex Matheson's old contacts for information, but meets a brick wall. Frustrated, Rex takes off in the car to visit Dr. Juarez while Jack hits up the local bar to "relieve some stress." That's right boys and girls, it's time for some boys and girls!  Juarez plays doctor with Rex Matheson, while Jack picks up a local male bartender who likes his coat. Graphic!  Unless you're in the UK, who bizarrely excised the scene.
  • Poor Oswald Danes is still having a tough time on the outside, being recognized in a local diner and pursued to the point of needing the police!  Of course, the police proceed to take him to an empty lot and beat him senseless before dropping him off.
  • Perhaps still in the post-nookie haze, Rex convinces Dr. Juarez to accept Jilly Kitzinger's offer, the group outfitting her with Torchwood's famous video camera contact lenses! She and Gwen infiltrate the facility, Gwen stealthily nabbing info from Kitzinger's office while Juarez sits to watch the presentation.
  • Jack manages to infiltrate Oswald Danes' hotel room to learn more about why Phicorp wants him, and confronts Danes himself.  Bill Pullman pushes out his creepiest performance yet, confessing that he enjoyed the rape and murder of the young girl that landed him in prison, and has something of a death wish. A confrontation with security quickly sees Jack ejected from the premises.
  • Both outside on the hotel TV, and from Dr. Juarez in the press conference, we learn Phicorp's dastardly plan: with Oswald Danes as their public face, the corporation wants to legalize the prescription-free distribution of painkillers, netting themselves billions in the process!
