Everything old is new again on Cartoon Network. The net just announced plans to revive the ThunderCats franchise for a new series. The animation will be anime style, and marks Warner Bros. Animation's first anime series. Warner Bros. Animation is collaborating with Japan's Studio4C on the project, whose work you might have seen in The Animatrix, Batman Gotham Knight, and Halo Lengends.
Warner Bros. says the cartoon will have a "dynamic visual style" and "realism," with our ThunderCats having "realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations." Because if there's one thing that we really need to see in a cartoon about humanoid aliens from the planet Thundera who must fight a mummified demon-priest, it's realism. The press release says the new series will focus on the "grand origin story" of Lion-O's ascension to the throne, which presumably places it before the '80s series in the timeline.
ThunderCats is set to premiere on Cartoon Network sometime next year. Unless, of course, the whole thing falls apart like that ThunderCats movie a few years back.
