Oh cruel, cruel God.  Or perhaps after last night's "The Man Who Knew Too Much," I should be saying "oh cruel, cruel Castiel!"

TVLine is reporting that despite the ungodly events at the climax of Supernatural's sixth season closer "The Man Who Knew Too Much," series regular Misha Collins (Castiel) will be stepping back from that title to take a more reduced role in season seven.  The news had earlier been rumored that the actor would be leaving altogether, so Supernatural fans at least have a happy medium.

Series showrunner Sera Gamble confirmed that Collins would at least be present for the seventh season premiere, but to explain his involvement would be "giving away alot of the premiere."  Says Gamble of the change:

"When it comes to Supernatural, our philosophy is that everyone moves in and out and weaves in and out of the story, obviously with the exception of Sam and Dean  We love Misha. We love and adore the character of Castiel. His character developed to this extent and went in this unexpected direction because we were so inspired by him.”

Gamble also added that the shocking events of Friday's season finale were "a very pivotal moment in Cas’ development.  Basically, that’s what we’ll be exploring next season, so there’s just a big change.”  She confirms that there will indeed continue to be angel-centric stories in the seventh season, but “they will probably be more self-enclosed."

"We consciously kept some of this angel civil war off camera because we are interested in what happens on Earth,” she explains. “We are interested in what happens in the purview of the boys. We feel that in terms of what we can accomplish, the scope of the show, our storyline is best accomplished where the Impala can go.”

But as God, Chuck, Castiel or whoever you want to call it, closes a door, he also opens a window.  And who should return through that window in the wake of Misha Collins' reduced role?  Why, how about series creator Eric Kripke and executive producer Ben Edlund?!

TVLine explains that the pair are already hard at work on season seven, with Gamble adding “Their titles have changed.  There are a lot of technical and contractual reasons that people’s titles change that don’t necessarily reflect their level of involvement or commitment to the show. ... They’ve been in the [writers'] room with me every day this week.”

What say you?  Have Supernatural's wings been clipped without Misha Collins as a regular presence?  Can Kripke and Edlund steer season seven back on the right road?  Try not to shatter the windows and burn out our eyes in the comments section below!
