Rescue Me's Most Shocking Deaths

Rescue Me airs its series finale tonight and Denis Leary's Tommy Gavin isn't the only firefighter in need of rescue! Here are Rescue Me's Most Shocking Deaths to keep your flames burning.

Rescue Me concludes its fiery seven-year run tonight with series finale “Ashes,” near of ten years to the day of the September 11th attacks that the series so regularly focused on. And as Rescue Me fans anxiously await the fates of Tommy Gavin, Lou Shea, Sean Garrity, Mike Siletti, Franco Rivera and Black Shawn following the explosive cliffhanger of last week’s “Vows,” we’re left remembering some of Rescue Me’s Most Shocking Deaths.

Equal parts tragic and hilarious, Rescue Me rarely pulled any punches when it came to killing off major characters in unexpected and heartbreaking ways. Now that the series has come to a close after seven years, no character big or small may be safe from the fires that rage throughout the lives of FDNY’s 62 Truck. Family and friends alike have met their bitter ends from both fires and natural causes alike, and all their shocking deaths have come back to haunt Tommy Gavin.

Photos from the series finale would seem to suggest that Denis Leary’s Tommy Gavin lives to fight another day, but Rescue Me has been known to shock viewers with plenty of existential curveballs. Do you believe Tommy Gavin makes it through the series finale, or winds up eulogized by his fellow firefighters?

Which of Rescue Me’s deaths shocked you the most? From NYPD officer Johnny Gavin to his brothers in the service, who will you remember most when Rescue Me airs its final episode? Give us your take on Rescue Me’s most shocking deaths in the comments below!

Chief Jerry Reilly

Rescue Me strongly painted the portrait that every firefighter dreads the inevitable day where their age catches up with them and forces them to work behind a desk, rather than rush into burning buildings. Yet, for all we’d invested in Chief Jerry Reilly; his gambling problems, gay son, struggles with his Alzheimer’s andaffected wife, Rescue me shocked us hard when Jerry quickly decided to put a gun to his head rather than retire from active duty.

Billy Warren

Every new series faces that inevitable redshirt moment where a well-liked character needs a brutal and shocking death to set the stakes for the rest of our heroes. One of Rescue Me’s most shocking deaths came from firefighter Billy Warren, who bit the big one as early as the series eighth episode by saving Tommy in a fire. Though, perhaps more attention-grabbing than his shocking death was what his wife revealed about Billy posthumously, causing the other firefighters to compare their own... hoses. Let’s go with hoses.

John "Stack" Stackhouse

Having attended Probie school with Tommy, Jimmy Keefe and Needles, John “Stack” Stackhouse was another well-liked member of the crew brutally injured in a fire for pathos’ sake. He survived the fire with severe burns and amputated legs (soon to be hands as well), but Stack gives us one of Rescue Me’s most shocking deaths in that Tommy was the one to convince him to actually let go, his life not worth living as a vegetable firefighter. Harsh.

Asshole the Dog

Rescue Me has given us some truly shocking deaths, but did they have to kill the poor puppy? Tommy’s well-named pooch proved a pain at first, but eventually bonded with his firefighter owner. That is of course, until Uncle Teddy accidentally released the dog to be run over in the street! More shocking stilly, Tommy actually cried over it! Well, that and his dead mother. But mostly the dog.

Jenny Ng

Relationships routed in money rarely last, as was the case with Michael Gavin’s brief marriage to rich Asian cat lady Jenny Ng. It wasn’t terribly shocking when she dropped dead randomly and barely left Michael a dime, but most disturbing of all for Rescue Me was when Tommy, Michael and Lenny stumbled upon her corpse, half-eaten by her own cats!
