It was the video game that spawned a movie, that spawned a sequel, both of which were terrible, but went on to spawn a trailer for a gritty reboot, that spawned a web-series.

Why, it's Mortal Kombat, of course.  Production has begun on the ten-part web series that sprang from director Kevin Tancharoen's concept trailer for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, a gritty re-imagining of the franchise characters in a real-world police procedural setting.

The series, written by Tancharoen and Spartacus: Blood and Sand writers Todd and Aaron Helbing and  starring Michael Jai White, Jeri Ryan and Ian Anthony Dale (reprising their roles as Jax, Sonya Blade and Scorpion, respectively) mainly follows Scorpion, tasked by Jax and Sonya enter the underground tournament and bring down Shang Tsung, amidst his own personal vendetta against Sub-Zero.

Rumored to be appearing in the series as well are Liu Kang, Durak, Kabal, Kitana, Mileena, and possibly even Shao Khan.  Tancharoen today tweeted out several tantalizing photos from the production:

It was Goro that had the harpoon, right?

Tancharoen writes, "Blue is not Kitana."  Mileena, perhaps?

"Friendship or fatality?  Which do you prefer?"  I think he knows.

We don't know who this is.  The Walking Dead's Rick Grimes, doing a walk-on?

Aww, Jax is happy.

What do you think?  Are you ready to "get over here," as soon as Mortal Kombat: Rebirth comes a-callin?  Make your finishing move below!
