"It’s the choices we make during a fork in the road that define who we are."
This week’s episode marks the midway point for Dexter’s sixth season, and a turning point for Dexter himself. After the push and pull of faith versus the dark passenger, uncertain beliefs versus the stability of the past, light versus dark—Dexter makes his choice.
Read on to find out what exactly the episode brought us.
- While tailing Travis, Dexter gets word of Brother Sam’s shooting. He leaves to go to the hospital just before Travis meets Geller.
- At the crime scene, Dexter reasons that Sam’s shooting was a calculated move by Leo Hernandez. He scrapes some blood off the baseball bat he used to deter Hernandez back when he first threatened Sam, but Anderson discovers that Hernandez’s attack may be linked to Julio’s death.
- The people whom Sam has helped in the past hold a candlelight vigil for him, and Dexter attends. He talks to Nick, the man whom Brother Sam baptized last week, and gets confirmation of Hernandez’s involvement and his whereabouts, but he also gets to stand with the rest of Sam’s friends as they pray for him. When the service leader asks for a prayer for the misguided shooter, however, most people leave in disgust. Dexter narrates, “I’d rather prey on him.”
- Dexter goes to hunt down Hernandez, but is robbed of the chance when the police arrive and Hernandez goes down in a shoot-out. They find the security footage of the shooting, and after watching it, Dexter isn’t so sure of Hernandez’s guilt. Sam’s watchdog was quiet the entire time, which leads Dexter to believe that the shooter is, in fact, Nick himself. He breaks into Nick’s apartment and pulls a bullet from the wall, matching it to the bullet found in Sam.
- Deb’s still having problems adjusting to her new position. To make matters worse, Quinn’s complicated the investigation by sleeping with Porter, who has just become a key material witness in deciphering Geller’s old works.
- It looks like Travis and Geller are still carrying out their apocalyptic plans as the Two Witnesses, as Geller deems them. Although he’s still carrying out Geller’s orders, it seems like Travis is second-guessing the whole thing, even visiting his sister, a schoolteacher, and asking for painkillers for their latest captive.
- Sam regains consciousness for a brief moment in the hospital. Dex runs to talk to him, and Sam asks Dex to forgive Nick. He knows about Dexter’s darkness, but he also knows that there is light inside of him. If Dexter doesn’t let his darkness go, the darkness isn’t going to let go of him.
- Dex watches the doctors break the news of Sam’s passing, and he leaves the ER upset and runs into Nick. The two go to the beach where he was baptized, and Nick explains that he shot Sam to get back in with his old gang. Dexter realizes that he’s approached a fork in his road. He tells Nick that Brother Sam has forgiven him and offers Nick the chance to turn himself into the police, but Nick is happy that he’s just gotten away with murder. In a scary fit of rage, Dexter drowns him in the river. He narrates, “There’s no light in you. There’s no light in me.” He finishes the deed, turns around, and sees an image of his dead brother Brian, Ice Truck Killer and dark-willed brother extraordinaire. Dexter has made his choice—his Dark Passenger is here to stay.
Hopefully, Brother Sam’s unfortunate fate isn’t the last we’ll see of Mos Def, who has truly been a great guest star this season. We’ve still got Colin Hanks and Edward James Olmos—Doomsday—and who knows what they have in store for the rest of the season. Tune in next Sunday at 9 PM on Showtime to watch “Nebraska” to catch what happens next.
