It looks like UGO is finally getting its wish, as the instant classic Vertigo comic series, 100 Bullets, will be adapted into a new crime series. Even better though, the show is set to be on Showtime, a pay cable network that should allow the series to be appropriately gritty and violent. And even better than THAT is the fact that at the helm is a man with a wealth of experience when it comes to comic book adaptations: David Goyer.
Goyer wrote all three Blade movies, the first of which was arguably the first of the modern onslaught of superhero movies, coming out in 1998, two years before X-Men. The writer also worked on the scripts for all three Christopher Nolan Batman movies, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and the upcoming Dark Knight Rises. With experience on so many street-based comic adaptations, he should have no problem stepping into the edgy crime saga contained within 100 Bullets' 100 issues.
Showtime can get away with this, right?
100 Bullets was a critically acclaimed series as DC Comics' Vertigo imprint, garnering both Harvey and Eisner Awards over the course of its 10 year run. Written by industry veteran Brian Azzarello with art by the extremely influential cartoonist Eduardo Risso, it's a favorite among comic book afficionados and a go-to example of smart genre comics done well.
The series' name comes from a briefcase containing 100 untraceable bullets that the book's main character, Agent Graves, hands out to jilted individuals as a way of getting revenge on those who wronged them. Though 100 Bullets began telling mostly stand-alone stories, it eventually evolved into an overarching storyline involving an secret international organization known as The Trust.
There's no word yet on when we might see the series on the tube, or even when it may start filming, but we're hoping for more intel to come out of next month's San Diego Comic Con. For now, check out the full story over at Deadline.
