Finally, nerds can stop tearing themselves to pieces over the works of George R.R. Martin; book five has arrived.

A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin has announce (cryptically) that at long last, writing work on the fifth novel in the series A Dance With Dragons has finally been completed!

By posting a picture of a slain King Kong to his LiveJournal (yes, those are apparently still around), Martin implied that the beast which had been tormenting him for years was finally put to rest.  His editor, Ann Groell clarified the news:

"It is true. Kong is dead. There were a few moments of George in a spare office yesterday, cleaning up the last bits and inserting a few new bits in longhand, while I typed the changes into the electronic files, but we are honestly and officially done. And there is MUCH rejoicing!"

A Dance With Dragons had vamously been in development for five years, having branched off from Martin's original vision for fourth novel A Feast For Crows.  And even then, Dragons was originally considered as the series' second installment, when Martin envisioned it as a trilogy.

Not to be confused with Westeros' number one reality show, Dancing With the Dragons

Of course, HBO Game of Thrones fans won't see the events of A Dance With Dragons for several years, as the recently announced second season will cover the story of A Clash of Kings, with third and fourth novels A Storm of Swords and Feast for Crows possibly each needing two seasons to cover.  But a man can dream!

At long last, Westeros fans can look forward to reading A Dance With Dragons when it arrives in stores on July 12th.

What say you?  Will you be among the first to pick up the novel, or are you worried about why it took so long to finally get out?  Give a cheer for Westeros and emblazon your thoughts below!
