The Doctor Who presence at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 truly needs to be seen to be believed. The massive Hall H swarms with Daleks, Cybermen and weeping angels, all in attendance to get the latest from the Doctor himself, along with cast and crew for the second half of the new season! Who’s on hand to get the news, straight from the regenerated eyes and ears of Matt Smith and co? Why, UGO of course! Check out what we learned!
- Matt Smith claims there are sure to be loads of big cliffhangers in the upcoming episodes, which begin August 27th on BBC-A!
- On the subject of doing more filming in America, cast and crew would be thrilled to film in Los Angeles, to the delight of the California crowd.
- We saw a clip from Being Human creator Toby Whitman’s upcoming episode “The God Complex,” which features an intensely grotesque, Minotaur-like creature. It's seen stomping through the Doctor’s hotel, as he lures it to his location with his booming voice, while Amy hides. There’s a very surreal quality to the scene, which also features a deranged looking clown and a nurse. The Doctor finally reveals his ruse of luring the monster through an intercom!
- We also caught a few tidbits from a sizzle reel of the coming episodes, including the group accidentally saving Hitler’s life, Cybermen, the Doctor and Rory kissing, River Song with an eyepatch, lots of creepy monsters, Rory and Amy riding off on a motorcycle, the Doctor in a tuxedo top hat and cane and, of course, the Astronaut rising from the deep to kill the Doctor!
- And don’t worry, writer Piers Wenger confirms that we’ll see a resolution to the astronaut plot.
- When asked if the Daleks would return in the upcoming episode, Piers Wenger confessed only one word could answer that: “spoilers.”
- Will there be another five Doctor series? Piers would love it, but its more of a question for Steven Moffatt to answer. The same goes for whether or not the Doctor’s daughter would ever return.
- Matt Smith would love to see the Dream Lord come back, this time with a much bigger army, as it was a really interesting concept.
- Could we ever see the Doctor regenerate into a woman? The process is always led by the actor or actress in question, but its certainly possible. The crew feel the idea of a female Doctor had its thunder stolen somewhat by River Song.
- If given their choice of crossovers beside Torchwood, Matt Smith would love to cross into True Blood, while Karen Gillan still geeks out over Star Trek: The Next Generation. Matt’s aware that The Big Bang Theory references Doctor Who quite a bit, so maybe they could pop up in a shop somewhere.
- Matt also hopes to see more of the Doctor’s dark side explored, as “there’s a lot of blood on his hands,” and he’d have a lot to contemplate with all the people he’s lost. Piers adds that the Doctor’s dark side is definitely explored in the upcoming tenth episode of the series, and there’s a lot to explore in the idea that The Doctor lies.
Be sure to use your sonic screwdriver to turn on Doctor Who August 27th when the Tardis flies on to the BBC-A!
