Oh Nucky. We know you're out gallivanting with ladies of the
night, but your greatest asset is right under your nose! In this week's
episode, ''Ourselves Alone,'' Nucky gets out of jail after everyone turns on
him. Margaret pulls a fast one on the authorities and saves Nucky's butt. Chalky
White takes over the jail and the Commodore pits Jimmy against Eli. Never a
dull moment in this show, right? Check out our recap of the episode below:
Nucky doesn't spend a whole lot of time in jail, but public opinion
is against him. It's widely believed that he did indeed commit election fraud
and he can't manage to joke with the press the way he usually does. Never
thought we'd see the day where Nucky's wit can't get him out of anything. He
doesn't know who did this to him at the beginning, but he's certain he can get
himself out of it, telling Mayor Bader, ''I'm going to beat this, Ed. And when I do, I'm going to remember who
showed up here today and who didn't.''
Margaret finds her maids gossiping about the newspaper headlines. When she finds out that Nucky is in jail, she instructs the ladies to carry on with work and takes matters into her own hands. She calls Nucky's valet Eddie to get the details. Then our crafty lady dresses up as a new immigrant who has been told to see Mr. Thompson. She pads her stomach and pretends to be preggers and faint. She asks to use the facilities and sneaks out with something very, very important.
Nucky and Margaret host a dinner for an Irish man trying to raise money to take up arms against the Brits. After the meal, they sit down for a fireside chat. Nucky confides in her about Eli and Jimmy's rebellion against him and that the Commodore is running the show. Margaret shows him what she took out of Nucky's office when she dressed up. $20,000 and the ledger documenting all his illegal activities. She tells him that from now on, he's got to commit everything to memory and burn the ledger. "You are smarter than your enemies, and you will persevere. But you're not thinking clearly now. You must concentrate, and not give over to emotion,'' she tells him. Then she takes him to bed. Ooh, Margaret. You are far more than an Irish maid, aren't you?
The Commodore takes down the county treasurer's ward bosses and lifts an elephant tusk over his head. He also starts a rivalry between co-conspirators Jimmy and Eli. Jimmy heads to New York to strike a deal with Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky. He gets them the hooch and they get him heroin. While he's off doing drug deals, the Commodore gets Eli to call Nucky. Eli tells him, "Nobody takes power. Somebody else has to give it to them. Look around, big brother. What do you got?" The Commodore introduces Eli to the ''men who made this city'' including Leander Whitlock.
Chalky is stuck in prison while Nucky deals with his own troubles, but he's made good use of his time. He's consistently badgered by fellow inmate Dunn Pursley. But Chalky chats up the other inmates about all the things he's done for them. They take Pursley down as Chalky declares, ''Pursley be done.'' One of the prisoners hands Chalky his copy of David Copperfield, calling him Sir. He has the book read aloud.
Strong episode and it's amazing to see Margaret take over for Nucky. She's one tough cookie, this lady from Ireland. My one regret? No Richard Harrow! That man just blows us away with his performance every week. So what did you think? Let us know below.
