Strange creatures emerge from the bottom of the ocean and urge us to stop the fighting and the killing.
Many consider The Abyss to be simply a warm-up to the special effects extravaganza that was director James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day (and, later, Titanic), but this intense underwater adventure is an astonishing accomplishment in and of itself. If Cameron hadn't revealed himself as an old softie before, he certainly did with this film, complete with a "make love not war" message and an estranged married couple finding love again in the deep blue sea. Yeah, it's ultimately a big budget hippie movie, but definitely an immersive and fascinating one as well, with terrific performances by Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Terminator and Aliens alum Michael Biehn in a rare villain role.
