Lt. Hiram Coffey was the leader of a group of Navy SEALs sent in to retrieve an American missile submarine, the USS Montana, after it sinks along the edge of the Cayman Trough under mysterious circumstances. The SEALs set up their base of operations on an underwater oil rig, and Coffey almost immediately proceeds to screw things up, developing an extreme case of High Pressure Nervous Syndrome that causes him to become paranoid, hostile and unreasonable. Coffey freaks out the most about a group of strange NTIs (non-terrestrial intelligence) lurking 'round the sunken sub and tries to blow them up - he ends up imploding when his submersible can't take the pressure of The Abyss.
