Release date: July 27, 2001
Tim Burton reimagines the classic sci-fi schlock into a grim, dystopian future full of damn dirty apes.
The Planet of the Apes series from the '60s and '70s is a perfect time capsule of Love Generation excess - ape and man together at last to learn moral messages about the futility of warfare. But 2001 was a much darker time (even before 9/11), and director Tim Burton cast the franchise's reboot in a much grimmer light. When astronaut Leo Davidson is catapulted a thousand years into the future, he must contend with an Earth full of evolved simians and even an interspecies romance. The makeup is flabbergastingly good (courtesy of the great Rick Baker) and Tim Roth owns the show as the menacing General Thade.
Tim Burton (director), Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Clarke Duncan, Estella Warren, Paul Giamatti, Kris Kristofferson, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, David Warner, Lisa Marie, Glenn Shadix, Charlton Heston.
