Release date: February 9, 2001
The silence is broken as an old enemy and Clarice Starling's dismissal from the FBI brings Hannibal Lecter out of hiding.
Ridley Scott's beautiful and grotesque bit of grand guignol is a deliciously entertaining freak show, with Anthony Hopkins obviously having the time of his life in reprising his Oscar-winning role. Julianne Moore is a fine replacement for Jodie Foster, and Gary Oldman hams it up as a disfigured skeleton in Lecter's closet. The production spared no expense, with the gothic, foreboding locations in Italy being nothing short of breathtaking, and the film's climax involving a dinner date with Ray Liotta is especially memorable in its gruesomeness. Great stuff, as long as you accept the fact that it's a completely different animal from The Silence of the Lambs.
