Clarice Starling was an FBI trainee when she first encountered the brilliant and psychopathic serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. While Lecter was incarcerated, Starling enlisted his help in tracking down the serial killer known as Buffalo Bill. Lecter delighted in a series of psychological games with the young Agent in exchange for information, and the two formed a strange yet powerful bond. Starling got her man and Lecter escaped for parts unknown - ten years later, they would be reunited after Starling is disgraced after a botched drug raid and Lecter's only surviving victim, the revenge-minded Mason Verger, hatches an elaborate plan to track down the doctor. The game is on again as Lecter ends up needing Starling more than he realized - and perhaps vice-versa as well.
