Lila Culpepper is an art teacher and live-in girlfriend of up-and-coming young psychiatrist Sam Foster. She is also a survivor of a suicide attempt and agrees to help Sam reach his new patient, an aspiring artist named Henry Letham, who is threatening to kill himself at midnight on his twenty-first birthday, which is in just a matter of days. From there, Lila and Sam embark on a strange and dangerous journey in which reality itself is challenged, contradicted and questioned, a journey which ends with a horrible car accident on the Brooklyn Bridge, where the two lovers discover the truth about Henry, themselves and the very world they live in.
