Leo O'Bannon is a Prohibition-era crime boss who runs things in his city like a good Irish gentleman - he's charming, fair but ready for a fight if one is deemed necessary. He's also a bit whipped when it comes to Verna Bernbaum, a young lady who's also having a secret affair with Leo's advisor, Tom Regan. When the affair is discovered, Leo and Tom have a falling out (quite literally - Leo repeatedly punches Tom and Tom goes falling down a flight of stairs) and Tom begins working for Leo's rival, Johnny Caspar. Leo is also something of "an artist with a Thompson," single-handedly blowing away several would-be assassins with a Tommy gun when they invade his home.
