Francoise and her boyfriend Etienne had no desire for city life. They wanted a sunny paradise where they weren't held down by the rules and structure of society, a community where everyone strives for the greater good, hunts and plants for food and gets a great tan. They've heard rumors that such a place exists, a secluded area in Thailand known only as The Beach, and they come across a young American named Richard who has a map to their paradise.
