Dr. Cal Lightman is the founder of The Lightman Group, a private company that serves as an independent contractor in assisting crime investigations through applied psychology. A respected but controversial psychologist, Lightman is an expert at analyzing body language and micro expressions in order to tell when a subject is lying. He was driven to his profession by his mother's suicide and tends to obsess over the smallest details rather than seeing the "big picture." Lightman is divorced from Zoe Landua with joint custody of their teenage daughter, Emily. The character of Dr. Cal Lightman is based on Dr. Paul Ekman, a psychologist at UC San Francisco.
