Poor Abby Cairn may have been driven to stark raving madness by her brilliant and quite sociopathic son, Joshua, but the little devil's father, Brad, doesn't crack so easily. You see, Brad Cairn practices "tough love," with an emphasis on the "tough" (and perhaps dropping the "love" completely) - he knows his son is a nutcase, he knows the little psycho killed his grandmother, and he knows the crazy brat wants to kill his baby sister - and Brad will have none of it. Brad stops going to work, begins chain smoking day and night and never leaves the little baby's side, all the while scowling at Joshua, practically daring his son to try something. When Brad finally does crack and resort to physical violence against Joshua (in public, no less), it isn't so much heartbreaking as it is tragically inevitable.
