Why You Need It:

Director Ridley Scott's "haunted house in space" tale is still one of the best sci-fi, horror, and sci-fi/horror films ever made, with Sigourney Weaver staking her claim as the true 20th Century Fox with her debut appearance as Ellen Ripley, the most kick-ass woman in the universe. Alien is a truly excellent cinematic experience, filled with shocks, surprises and a slow-burn sense of dread and isolation. It's hard not to be freaked out by the alien bursting out of poor John Hurt's chest, no matter how many times you've seen it. James Cameron would turn the whole thing into a funhouse ride with Aliens; Ridley Scott isn't really interested in "fun."
