Whether or not you're as obsessed with comics as we are, you need to be paying attention. DC Comics is about to unleash one of the most important and disruptive events in all of pop culture.
Starting this August, every superhero title under the DC Comics label is experiencing a reboot. Not just any reboot--those happen all of the time. This is a serious reboot. Every single hero book is going to start again at issue #1. That means FIFTY-TWO books will experience a near-simultaneous relaunch. And yes-everybody's getting a new costume. Unfortunately, some titles won't make the cut, but you can't make a Super Omelette without breaking some Super Eggs. Or so says Super Lenin, the Space Communist robot from the future who I just made up and think should have his own book come the DC house cleaning.
The first book to relaunch, Justice League, gets its first issue from superstars Jim Lee and Geoff Johns on August 31st. In what I am sure is not a coincidence, this coincides with the end of the current Flashpoint event. Alright, DC, now we have our hopes up for an absolutely multiverse-shattering ending.
The new League will have 14 members, with (from what we know so far) Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Cyborg, and The Flash at its core. Man, nobody appreciates the Martian Manhunter anymore. So what, he's scared of fire. The Green Lantern is scared of the color yellow, which includes not only fire but everything else yellow, like dandelions. Just saying.
We'll keep you posted as we find out more about DC's bid to take the comics crown back from Marvel. DC promises a more modern look as well as more diversity, so you can definitely expect at least somebody besides Batwoman to be gay. It's about time, Wonder Woman. It's about time.
