Alan Moore, for all his reclusiveness and secrecy, has never been one to sit quietly. With constant aggravation arising from "the man" -- interference in his work from both comic publishers (don't get him started on DC) and Hollywood (really, really don't get him started about movie adaptations) -- Moore has become viciously outspoken against the big name players in the industry.
In an interview with The Guardian, he said, "Much as I love the medium, I despise the industry. I've always despised it to a certain degree but after this last few years and all this nonsense with the films, I believe it to be a completely poisonous place that isn't really going anywhere. I did once feel I was part of a movement that wanted to change comics into something was valuable to culture, but I don't really feel that kinship in the way I used to."
Yikes.
Thankfully, the comic guru might be warming up -- or at least, preparing to take matters in to his own hands.
Bleeding Cool was in attendance at last night's Dodgem Logic show (a live version of Moore's current online zine), where an audience member questioned Moore on expanding his creative forces, possibly to the world of video games. Surprisingly, Moore was keen on the idea.
"What I thought was wouldn’t it be funny if I came up with an idea that was like brilliant – and had all these other ideas, kind of, embedded in it.... Hey this is the 21st century people want to expand everything into multiple platforms, into games and all sorts of things, so what if I embraced that, what if I came up with a concept that could spin out into all sorts of things that I believe, in the way that I wanted to... That would be quite diabolical, couldn’t it?
Moore goes on to state that the "mega project" could see some activity in the next twelve months, but that he couldn't say more.
The "transmedia" fad is all the rage and, quite possibly, the future of all entertainment, so seeing Moore accepting the evolution and making it is own is promising. Imagine Moore's Watchmen or Top 10 being conceived originally as a cross-platform property. With the writer's savvy storytelling skills and knack for weaving in the unlikeliest of references, the mind-bending journey could be on par with something like LOST.
There are few details at the moment, but like Moore states, we're sure to hear some in the near future. Even without much info, the concept's broad scope is exhilarating -- the world can always use more Moore.
