Blu-sday: Zombie Viruses, Ninja Violence and Ultimate Vengeance

Check out the newest DVD releases for the week of March 16.

There’s a ray of hope and sunshine in the release of the CG-animated Astro Boy movie, what with Astro Boy’s shiny metal personality and butt-guns, but the week is certainly clouded over by the work of dark forces, dark viruses and dark ninjas. Who knew that March was such a sinister month?

Ninja Assassin Blu-ray

Ninjas. Blood. Ninjas! Swords. Ninjas! Guns. And did we mention ninjas? You can fault this movie for not having the best plot and/or acting and/or dialogue, but the stunts, the action, the fights and, of course, the ninjas all make up for that and more. More a throwback to the badass ninja movies of the 1980s with a blockbuster action movie feel than a blockbuster itself, Ninja Assassin deserves its own space on your DVD shelf.

Pontypool Blu-ray

In the small town of Pontypool, on the frozen Canadian tundra, dethroned radio shock-jock Grant Mazzy (a direct homage to King Douchebag Don Imus) is hosting his daily radio show. But the townspeople are becoming zombies, but not because of some plague or virus transmitted through their bite. This virus is transmitted somehow through speech. That’s right, just by saying the right (or wrong, as it were) word or phrase could turn you into a mindless zombie. It’s kind of like chemistry class or church, only less bloody. This frightener has gained a lot of hype and praise on the film festival circuit. Maybe you should see what all the hype’s about.
