Every week UGO digs into the forgotten Blu-Rays and DVDs that make the children cry. Like The Scorpion King 2.

The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior (2008)

Hollywood doesn’t get discouraged by diminishing returns. First there was The Mummy back in the day with Boris Karloff. Then Hollywood remade it with Brendan Fraser. Then they made a sequel to that movie. Then they made a spin-off to that sequel with The Scorpion King. Now, you can go to the discount DVD/Blu-Ray store and pick up a sequel to a spin-off of a sequel to a remake.

The plot’s more or less the same Hercules: Legendary Journeys-type sword and sorcery as you’d see in any straight-to-shelves release, with an unhealthy emphasis on Greek mythology (which is out of place in a movie about Egypt). A band of warriors marches off to Hell to get a sword, and on the way meets up with embarrassing CGI that is done no favors with the bad video transfer. Sure, it probably made back its original investment, but when you’re working with a film that reads like a college senior project, that’s a small nut to crack. Go ahead, rent it, and wonder why so many better movies haven’t gotten the same chance as The Scorpion King 2.
