Tuesday is new release day in the world of anime, and my
pick this week is an unusual comedy hiding behind the more-likely volumes of
shonen action and high school romance.
Maria-Holic is a
full-on comedy that only pretends to be a romantic comedy. It's also a good
chance to introduce readers to the genre of shojo
ai (literally, "girl's love"). The series is about Kanako, a lesbian so afraid
of men and so desperate to meet the girl of her dreams that she enrolls at an
all-girls school, only to find that her roommate is a sadistic guy in drag with
possibly the world's rudest maid.
You can pick up the entire
series on DVD today-it retails for $39.98, but you can pick it up at
Rightstuf for $23.99.
