Comprised of two Dallas Cowboys (singer Marc Colombo and bassist Leonard Davis) and one Miami Dolphin (drummer Cory Procter), Free Reign is out to prove that it's not a gimmick for pro football players to play hard rock/heavy metal.
The group (which also contains non-footballer Justin Chapman on guitar) is gearing up to release their full-length debut, Heavier Than Metal on April 19th, via DC Rightside Music.
On the eve of the album's release, Procter was willing to do what needed to be done for a Short-But-Sweet Interview.
UGO: What is the name of the forthcoming album, and how heavy is it?
CORY PROCTER: The name of our new album is Heavier Than Metal. It's really a great mix of heavy riffs and great melodies. There's a number of songs on there that'll knock your face in but some that aren't as aggressive but still have great drive!
UGO: Do you agree that the album's first single, "One Step Away," is heavier than the Chicago Bears classic, "The Super Bowl Shuffle"?
CORY PROCTER: Definitely! I don't think you can compare the two at all. They're two totally different genres with different intentions. That was a gag deal that was funny and it was meant for that. "One Step Away" has meaning and a lot of work went into it.
UGO: How will three of the band members balance a music career with a football career?
CORY PROCTER: Well we've been doing it for a couple years now so we're OK at it. During the season it's all football, but it turns to music when the season ends and we start working on our material.
UGO: Can jocks rock?
CORY PROCTER: Anyone can rock! It just takes a little dedication and hard work. A lot of people might take us for a gimmick, but once they hear our music are really surprised and pleased!
UGO: Will there be an NFL season in 2011-12?
CORY PROCTER: I'm sure we'll have a season. Neither side wants the lockout but it's what has to happen to come to an agreement right now. If there isn't a season you might see a Free Reign lockout tour!
UGO: Which is the heaviest song played at sporting events - "We Will Rock You," "Welcome to the Jungle," or "Cotton-Eyed Joe"?
CORY PROCTER: All great songs, but I think "Welcome to the Jungle" wins out on this one.
