The Dark Knight Rises: Bane Facts

You've seen Tom Hardy look awesome as the character in posters and promos, but who exactly is Bane? Don't worry about shelling out cash for graphic novels and back issues, we'll teach you all about the villain that will appear in The Dark Knight Rises.

Bane is Batman's ultimate threat. Not only does he pose the same mental challenge the likes of Riddler can offer, but he also has the physical might and talent to engage Batman in a brutal fight if needed.

It's looking like The Dark Knight Rises version of Bane will show respect to both aspects, but before you fall in love with the movie version (no, not the one from Batman & Robin!), earn some geek cred by learning all about his comic-counterpart. There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding the foe, so we're here to clear them up. Once you're done with this read, you'll be able to walk into The Dark Knight Rises feeling like a certified Bane expert.

The Dark Knight Rises will break the box office when it hits theaters on July 20th, 2012.

Yes, He Broke The Bat!

Many have challenged and hurt Batman, but few have accomplished what Bane has. Bane not only physically broke Wayne, but mentally as well. As an inmate, Bane was fascinated by the stories of Batman and how people cowered before him. Gotham being ruled by fear also peaked his interest, so he sought to conquer both upon escaping the prison. Before destroying Batman himself, he wanted Batman to be at an all-time low. In order to do such, he conducted a break out at Arkham Asylum. The result was some of Batman's most dangerous enemies running free in Gotham (Joker, Scarecrow, etc.) and Batman was determined to stop them all. This gauntlet of fight after fight and a lack of sleep took a major toll on Wayne, and finally one day Bane was waiting for him right in his mansion. Batman was too weak to stand any kind of a chance, and Bane violently defeated the hero. Instead of killing him, Bane wanted him to be useless and suffer, so he cracked the hero's spine over his knee. Will this happen in the film? All signs are pointing to yes so far. From the poster of Bane walking away from a shattered cowl to the catch phrase "the legend ends," it looks like we might be treated to a deliciously dark and tragic ending for Nolan's Dark Knight. Hopefully you now feel like you know the character well and if you have any questions sound off in the comments section!
