That's where this clip comes in. If you just sorta know that the new movie has something to do with robots and Bruce Willis in a wig, you really ought to check it out. I haven't seen Surrogates yet, but I have a hunch it is good fun (Jonathan Mostow has a solid track record, in my opinion.) Maybe watching this will help you explain it to your friend a little.
