Oscars 2012 Winners And Losers

The superb Rise of the Planet of the Apes only received one nomination and that was for best visual effects. Andy Serkis dominated the role of Caeser and the stunning visuals made us connect more with him than we have with most human characters. That seems like a sure win, right? Wrong. Friggin' Hugo stole that one and, unfortunately, Caeser's army wasn't around to toss their poo at this epic fail of a decision.

One win out of five nominations ain't bad, right? The big screen adaption of Stieg Larsson's crime drama was a huge hit with audiences, but not so much with the Academy. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo earned recognition for best actress in a leading role, cinematography, film editing, sound editing and sound mixing. Out of those options, one would imagine Rooney Mara would take home best actress, but that would be an incorrect assumption. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was awarded a little golden dude for film editing.

Sorry, Rooney.

We were shocked and thrilled when we heard the hilarious Melissa McCarthy was nominated for best actress in a supporting role. It's just too bad the raunchy comedian didn't win. In all fairness, however, Octavia Spencer (The Help) was more than deserving of the award and it was nice to see how appreciative she was of the victory.

Michael Bay's third Transformers film is certainly flawed, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a blast to watch. We understand nothing Transformers related will ever get a nomination for directing or writing, but it couldn't even get some love for it's superb visuals and sound. Out of the three nominations, Transformers: Dark of the Moon takes home zero and I barely even heard the audience clap when it was announced for two of them... ouch.

It's a shame they don't have an award for "most explosions."
