Most Disgusting Horror Movies

David Croenenberg's remake of the classic 50s cheapie The Fly took body horror to whole new levels. In the original flick, the effects are pretty minimal - our scientist hero gets a fly head and some wings and calls it a day. But the remake puts Jeff Goldblum through the wringer courtesy of visual effects by Chris Walas. After a teleportation mixup comingles Seth Brundle's genes with a common housefly, he slowly mutates into one of the grossest creatures ever seen on film. The movie has tons of nasty scenes, including the grotesque inside-out baboon, but one of the most memorable is the arm-wrestling sequence.

We're going to be stepping outside of the comfort zone of American movies a few times on this list, because the rest of the world has some pretty nasty ideas about what horror can be. Case in point: Japan's Guinea Pig movies. The general theme of the series is torture and its effects on the human body, and the visual effects on display are so grossly realistic that in 1991 Charlie Sheen saw the second installment and reported it to the FBI as a snuff film. As the series progresses, it devolves into gory slapstick comedy, but the first two films still have the ability to shock and disturb.

Walking dead flicks are usually pretty dependable for gore effects, and Italian master Lucio Fulci's Zombie is no exception. When a boat full of rotting corpses floats into New York Harbor, it sets off a cavalcade of violence that features some incredibly gruesome effects. Some of the most famous bits include Fulci's maggot-riddled undead savagely biting and rending human flesh and one incredibly hard to watch scene where actress Olga Karlatos gets pulled through a door by a zombie and receives a splinter of wood right in her eye.

Before Peter Jackson rode Lord of the Rings to the big time, he was just a humble New Zealand director making some of the most disgusting horror movies ever made. Dead Alive (also known as Braindead) may be his masterpiece. The story is simple: when an elderly woman gets bitten by an infected monkey, she transforms into a flesh-eating zombie and spreads her plague all over the small Kiwi town she lives in. But the devil is in the details, and Dead Alive revels in the inside of the human body. People get strangled with intestines, chopped into bits, and at the gruesome climax we see the nastiest live birth ever put on film.
