It's hard to criticize Pixar, a studio that has never made a film that's less than stellar, but something is troublesome about some of the titles on the studio's upcoming slate: Toy Story 3, Cars 2, Monsters, Inc 2. See the pattern?

Disney has set a release date for the Monsters sequel (Monsters, llc, perhaps?) on November 16th, 2012, according to Variety. The same article also gives a release date for Brave, what may be the only non-sequel currently announced on the Pixar roster. Rumors had reported that another original story, Newt, had been canceled and it is, indeed, suspiciously absent from the upcoming lineup.

One assumes that Billy Crystal and John Goodman will reunite as the voice of Mike and Sully, but one is left to wonder where a sequel might take the characters. When we left them at the end of the first film, the monster society had restructured it's  literal scare tactics and it's hard to imagine much of conflict when it comes to monsters sneaking into children's rooms to make them laugh. What's more, the logical step of having the little girl, Boo, grown up threatens to retread some Toy Story territory.

Regardless of my current lack of excitement over the prospect of another Monsters, Inc, there's absolutely no reason not to have complete faith in Pixar. One does wonder, however, why, if they're going the sequel route, they haven't already greenlit an Incredibles 2.
