2010 Oscar Flashback: The Totally Awesome Losers of John Hughes

John Hughes' lovable and triumphant losers get their due as we celebrate the Totally Awesome Losers of John Hughes.

The films of John Hughes say different things to different people. Indeed, his magnum opus, The Breakfast Club, acts almost as a Durban Conference of American middle class youth cultures. Those mourning his loss the greatest, however, are the unpopular, unaccepted and misunderstood for whom le cinema du Hughes acted as an oasis of triumph in an adolescence of anxiety. The 2010 Oscars saw fit to recognize Hughes for his achievements with a moving eulogy delivered by a cadre of former Brat Packers, whom we recognize here.

Farmer Ted - Sixteen Candles

He was officially called "The Geek" but when asked his name he referred to himself as Farmer Ted. This is after he finally bagged his first babe, to use his own parlance. And not just any babe, the hottest chick in the school.

Proving that tenacity and luck were all you needed to prove that even night-brace wearing weaklings could be a demon in the sack, Farmer Ted's libidinal success at the tail end of Sixteen Candles showed to us all that, yes, every dog will have its day and we really should keep up our tongue exercises for that moment when opportunity knocks.

And should the hottest, blondest, most sensual cheerleader ever lean over in a convertible Rolls Royce to provide you oral gratification, be sure make a wisenheimer comment directly in the camera lens before you drive off to the "Peter Gunn Theme."
