The rapidity and dynamism of Wright's projects is in large part due to his frequent, bordering on obsessive, abuse, I mean use, of hyper-edited montage sequences. These sequences are all about violent crash pans, uncomfortably close close-ups and abstracted images. Wright uses montages for various narratively grounded effects.
Being nerds, his heroes all obsessively plan things in advance so oftentimes, montages are in Wright's films to poke fun of the way things often work differently in real life than in the characters' fantasies. Another frequent use of montages are for flashbacks, daydreams and sudden reminiscences. These are usually abrupt flashes of something awkward when viewed out of context.
